To do this, weave phrases and metaphors of violence into John's dialogue. As a businessman, he talks about crushing his competitors, stamping out rumours, slashing prices.

You can also have him talk about how he punched the guy who insulted is mother with lewd remarks, how as a fourteen-year-old he beat up the boy who tried to rape his sister, how he caught and beat up a burglar. He reckons his violence in these situations was justified, and Mary thinks so too. She even admires his courage and assertiveness. But the reader will notice that there were quite a few incidents of violence, and feels apprehension.
